Why Your eCommerce Store Needs an llms.txt File

For years, eCommerce store owners have spent a lot of time worrying about how Google sees their websites.

We’ve optimized product titles, rewritten descriptions, added structured data, created XML sitemaps and spent more hours than we would like to admit debating meta descriptions.

Now there’s someone else looking at your store: AI.

Customers are increasingly turning to ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and other AI-powered tools to research products, compare options and decide where to buy. Instead of searching for a product and clicking through ten different websites, shoppers can simply ask an AI assistant to find the best option for them.

That means your store needs to be understandable not only to traditional search engines, but also to the AI agents helping customers shop.

One way to make that happen is with an llms.txt file.

What Is an llms.txt File?

An llms.txt file is a plain-text file placed at the root of your website:

https://yourstore.com/llms.txt

Think of it as a quick-reference guide created specifically for large language models and AI agents.

It does not replace your sitemap, robots.txt file, structured product data or traditional SEO. Instead, it gives AI systems an explanation of your website and directs them toward the information that matters most.

The proposed llms.txt format uses simple Markdown that both humans and AI systems can easily read. It can include a short description of your business, important instructions and links to products, categories, policies, contact information and other useful pages.

A sitemap may tell an automated system that you have 20,000 pages. An llms.txt file helps explain which of those pages are important and what the website is actually about.

How AI Agents Use It

AI agents are designed to do more than return a list of links.

A customer might ask:

“Find a five-pound bag of individually wrapped candy for an office event that can be delivered by next Friday.”

“Which replacement part fits this model?”

“Does this store accept returns on opened products?”

“Can this item arrive before Friday?”

To answer those questions accurately, the AI agent needs to understand your products, categories, policies and how your store is organized.

An llms.txt file provides a structured starting point. It can direct the agent to authoritative pages instead of forcing it to guess which content is important.

That does not guarantee that every AI tool will use the file or that having one will suddenly place every product in an AI-generated shopping result.

However, it gives compatible AI systems a cleaner, more direct way to understand your store. As AI-assisted shopping continues to grow, making your information easier for agents to interpret is simply a best practice.

What Should Be Included?

An eCommerce llms.txt file should provide a clear overview of the store without trying to cram the entire website into one giant document.

Useful information may include:

  • Your store name and a short description of what you sell
  • Links to your main product categories
  • Links to featured or important products
  • Brand pages
  • Shipping information
  • Return and refund policies
  • Frequently asked questions
  • About Us and contact pages
  • Store policies
  • Information about product availability, pricing or ordering
  • Any special instructions that help explain how your store operates

The key is to make the information useful and easy to understand.

AI agents do not need a paragraph stuffed with every keyword you can think of. They need accurate descriptions, clearly labeled links and enough context to understand what each resource contains.

Your file should also be reviewed and updated regularly. Categories change, policies are updated, products are discontinued and new brands are added. An outdated llms.txt file can point AI agents toward information that is no longer accurate.

Shopify Is Already Preparing Stores for AI Agents

Shopify has been moving quickly into agentic commerce.

Shopify stores now automatically serve agent-discovery information through /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt. By default, these files include information such as the store name, store URL, sitemap, policies and additional discovery endpoints.

Shopify also uses Shopify Catalog to provide supported AI shopping channels with structured product information including titles, descriptions, options, images, pricing and availability. The catalog is continuously updated to help keep product and inventory information accurate.

Depending on which features have been rolled out to your store, you may also see agentic settings located under Sales Channels > Agentic Storefronts. This area allows merchants to review how product information is mapped and made available to supported AI shopping services.

Shopify merchants can also customize the information served through these discovery files by adding an agents.md.liquid, llms.txt.liquid or llms-full.txt.liquid template to their theme. For most stores, Shopify recommends using its automatically managed version unless advanced customization is necessary.

In other words, Shopify has already handled much of the basic setup.

That is great news for Shopify store owners.

BigCommerce Store Owners Are Left to Fend for Themselves

Unfortunately, not every eCommerce platform is automatically generating this information.

BigCommerce does not currently provide store owners with a built-in, automatically generated llms.txt file.

That means BigCommerce merchants need to create the file, decide what should be included, format it correctly, publish it at the proper URL and remember to update it as the store changes.

Technically, you could do all of this manually.

You could collect links to your categories, products, brands, content pages and policies. You could write the file in Markdown, find a way to publish it at /llms.txt and repeat the process whenever your catalog changes.

Or you could use the tool we built to do it for you.

Create Your BigCommerce llms.txt File with Your Store Tools

Our LLMS.txt Generator is part of the Your Store Tools suite and was built specifically for BigCommerce stores.

The tool connects to your store and helps generate a structured llms.txt file containing the information you want AI agents to see, including your primary categories, featured products, brands, content pages, policies and contact information.

You can also add your own text to provide additional context about your business, products or ordering process.

A visual editor and live preview let you review exactly what will be included before the file is published. Once everything looks the way you want, the tool publishes the file directly to your storefront at:

https://yourstore.com/llms.txt

When information changes, you can update the file and republish it to the same location.
