BigCommerce Training: How to Create a Coupon Code with the Promotions Engine

Deals drive shoppers and increase average order values, so why not offer your customers a reason to shop at your store?  Creating coupon codes in BigCommerce is simple and only takes a few moments.  Once created you can share your codes via social media, email marketing, etc in order to put them to work for you right away.

Below you’ll find a video of the process as well as a step-by-step instruction guide.

Let’s get started:

Step 1: Log into your BigCommerce control panel

Step 2: Go to Marketing > Promotions > Coupon

The instructions and video are specific to creating coupon codes using the Marketing > Promotions path.  Click here for instructions on how to create coupon codes in Marketing > Coupon Codes.

Step 3: Click on Create > With Advanced Editor

Step 4: Enter a name for your promotion, this is NOT the coupon code.

Step 5: In the Coupon Code field, you will see it’s been prepopulated with a random code.  You can use this code, or replace it with something more memorable, such as “SAVE20.”  What you enter here is what you will ask customers to enter at the checkout in order to receive their discount.

Step 6: Set a schedule for your promotion.  By default, it will automatically have a start date.  You can add an end date and time, or leave it open-ended for a coupon code that never expires.  You can also set up your coupon to only be valid during certain days, weeks, and times by clicking on Limit availability to particular weeks/days.

Step 7: Determine which customers will be able to use this coupon.  If you don’t select any targeting, the promotion will apply to everyone.  From here you can target customers who belong to a specific Customer Group or Shipping Destination.

Step 8: Set up your rules and rewards for the coupon.  Options available include:

  • Customers who buy products
  • Customers who’s order reaches a specific sub-total
  • No conditions at all

Reward options include:

  • A gift in the customer’s cart
  • Free shipping
  • A discount on products
  • A discount on the order subtotal
  • A fixed price for # of products

Step 9: If you want to set usage limits to the coupon you can:

  • You can limit the number of times the coupon code can be used in total.  For example, if you wanted only the first 100 customers to be able to take advantage of the coupon, you can set a 100 usage limit.
  • You can also limit the number of times an individual customer can use the coupon code.  If you want it to only be used one per customer, you can set a 1 limit.

Step 10: If you would like the coupon to be used along with other promotions, keep the Allow usage with other promotions box checked.  Otherwise, to not allow stacking, uncheck the box.

Step 11: Click Create Promotion and your coupon code is now live! We recommend testing your new coupon code on your store to make sure it’s functioning as you intended.
